In the game, the humans are at war with some aliens and they crash their ship onto a giant ring that they found. The ring has regular terrain (trees, grass, hills, cliffs, rivers) on the inside surface and it has a lot of tunnels all through it that are full of some kind of ancient technology that no one understands.
As you play the game, you learn that the ring is a doomsday device designed to wipe out all life in the galaxy. There are other rings like it, hidden around the galaxy. When one is activated, they all activate, sterilizing the galaxy with a huge burst of energy.
The rings were made by an ancient race called the founders, long, long before. They were a last ditch contingency to wipe out an alien plague/parasite that was taking over everything. In the game, you or the other aliens also awaken the plague and set it loose across the Halo.
At the end of the game, the Halo is destroyed when you self-destruct the human ship that crash landed on it. You escape as the Halo crumbles and explode
